Look up “multi-tasker” in the dictionary, and beside the definition you may find a picture of Thalia, widely acknowledged by media heavy-hitters as the most successful female solo Mexican artist ever. Not only has she sold over 40 million records worldwide, but she’s also the Queen of the Telenovela, given her starring roles in a number of soap operas, which were seen by more than two billion people. For some that might be more than enough, but not Thalia.
She’s also an author, model, fashion designer, magazine publisher, and record producer. Whew! But this superstar, who is married to music executive Tommy Mottola, still sees her primary work as being the mother of two—Sabrina, age 6, and Matthew, age 2.
On What Her Children Teach Her
‘My kids are like gurus to me. They become my teachers because they teach me how to just be present and to just be in the here and the now, and how to enjoy the simplicity of things.’
On Her Dreams for Her Children
‘I would prefer for them to be engineers, doctors, or psychologists. I would really prefer they do anything [outside of performing]! I’d rather them sing and act as a hobby or an escape. I say that because the entertainment industry is very hard. I started very young so I wouldn’t want them to suffer and go through the hard parts of it. If they really were serious about it, then yes mami would be there to support them.’
On How to Approach Parenting
‘Sometimes you just have to let go and let God. Try to understand that [motherhood] doesn’t come with a manual or a guide, it’s something that has to come from within.’
On How Motherhood Changed Her Music
‘Having a baby makes you want to connect with humanity in a more sincere and honest way. I’m not saying that before I didn’t do that, because before I did all kinds of romantic, profound, and touching songs, but now it’s a different approach.’
On Maintaining Balance
‘Find some time for yourself. It’s so important. Checkout for one to two hours a day if can. Take a hot shower, read a book, or listen to some music. But make sure you make time for yourself. After, you will feel amazing.’
